The effectiveness of art therapy in improving self-motivation, emotional and behavioral adjustment of children with special educational needs in Hong Kong was discussed in the pilot study. A total of 6 children aged 6 to 10 years old participated in the 14-week art therapy group. Standardized pre-test and post-test comparisons showed that the art therapy group had little effect on the children's sense of autonomy, competence, and relatedness, although the group had a positive effect on these three areas as observed over the group period. In addition, parent interviews reported that the art therapy group improved children's emotional and behavioral adjustment.
